Summer Concert Style

With Memphis in May beginning this weekend and summer concerts just around the corner, I wanted to share some of my summer concert essentials. I chose cool, comfortable clothes (such as a cotton tank and flat sandals) and practical, no-fuss accessories (like a small cross-body bag and delicate necklace).

Just throw your hair in a messy ponytail and you'll be ready to rock out in effortless style!

I'm obsessed with all the sea blue shades at J. Crew right now! Now is the perfect time to add a little more blue to your closet by shopping J. Crew's current store-wide sale. Take 25% off everything with code "springbest" until Sunday night!

Happy Friday! I'm anxiously awaiting Courtney's gender reveal party tomorrow! I'm so excited to find out if I'll be shopping pink or blue! (Although I told her I'm buying something mint either way :))

HANAair Hair Dryer Review

About a month ago, Misikko.com contacted me and extended an offer to review their most popular hair dryer. What? You want to send me a free hair dryer in exchange for my honest opinion? Sign me up! And a week later, it was on my doorstep in all it's beautifully packaged beauty. I couldn't believe all the goodies they included!

I've been using the Sedu Revolution 4000i for a couple of years now, and I have really liked it. I remember when I first bought it, I was unsure if it would be worth the price but ended up feeling so incredulous at how superior it was compared to my cheapo dryer I had before. Anyway, because I love my Sedu so much, I knew the Hana Air had big shoes to fill. And sadly, I have to report that the Hana Air just didn't impress me.

The first time I used it, I was amazed at how much power it has. I also noticed immediately how heavy it is. It's probably just because I wasn't used to it, but my arm started hurting about halfway through. My Sedu weighs only 1 pound! Another big difference between the Hana and Sedu is the size. The Hana's nozzle length seems extreme, which forced me to hold it even higher above my head in an awkward way. Again, since my Sedu is so compact and I've been using it for a couple years now, I'm just gotten so comfortable with its short nozzle, even with the attachment.

Because I like to make lists for every situation, I decided to make a pro/con list to sum up my thoughts.

The Hana Air just isn't for me, and that's okay. That doesn't mean it won't work well for another, so if you'd like to try the Hana Air Professional Dryer for yourself, you can get $20 off with promotion code "mystyle" at misikko.com.

In Pay-It-Forward fashion, I'm passing this dryer along to my mom, and if she likes it, it's hers to keep. If not, she'll pass it on to someone else, and so on. There's no reason for it to sit in my bathroom closet unused!

This is a sponsored post. I was given this hair dryer free of charge in exchange for my review but this post was written with my own, honest opinions.

Perforated Perfection

Perforated leather bags have been popping up on my radar with frequency lately, especially after I spotted the cross body bag from Ann Taylor. It's high on my wishlist right now, but I'm waiting out the sale price! I also came across the mint and lavender satchel at Aldo this past weekend and was thisclose to bringing it home with me.

The perforations are so fresh and the combination of neutral and pastels is perfect for spring! Which bag is your favorite?

Be sure and check out Sheree's blog, The Hartungs, today! You might just see an interview with yours truly :)

Citrus & Cognac

Ann Taylor Loft cardigan and jeans, Banana Republic shirt, Jessica Simpson wedges, J. Crew bracelets and clutch, kate spade sunnies

These boyfriend jeans have been on repeat every Friday...and pretty much every Saturday since I got them. I also may or may not wear them some Sunday evenings. I'm resisting the urge to get them in a darker wash, although I think I might go down a size in my next pair. These are my normal size 4 and fit great when I first put them on, but they stretch out quickly. Just a little perspective for those who are considering them... Get them now, and size down. Also, the regular length was perfect for my 5'3" height, surprisingly.

Does anyone have these Loft jeans AND the Gap boyfriends? What's your preference? I see those Gap jeans EVERYWHERE in blog land.

Sorry for the sporadic posting lately. I've admittedly been in some sort of funk... I've fallen behind on preparing my posts and currently have 515 unread blog posts on my Bloglovin feed. What is wrong with me?! I also have to catch up on replying to emails... I promise I haven't forgotten about you! Here's to hoping this funk goes away soon!

Anyone else know what I'm talking about?? What helps you get back into the groove?

Moving to Midtown

Yay! We are so excited to be moving in two weeks!

We've lived in downtown for three and a half years and we'll be sad to leave, but it's time.

We're only moving about 10 minutes out, to Midtown, so we'll still be close. We're moving out of our 1200 sq ft apartment into a 2000 sq ft house... with cheaper rent! It was a no-brainer.

Plus we'll be closer to our two favorite restaurants, Molly's & Trolley Stop. Win!

The house was built in the 1930s and has tons of charm. Also, a screened-in porch that we're really excited about. Any party we host will be BYOC because we have no patio furniture. Just a forewarning.

Our good friends, Barrett and Michelle, have rented this house for three years. They just became homeowners of a house on Mud Island (so excited for them!), and the timing just happened to work out perfectly for us! They're moving out next weekend, and we're moving in the week after.

I have not packed a thing.

Next week I'll have to get myself in gear. You'd be amazed how much stuff we've crammed into our little apartment.

Have a great weekend!

Look for Less: Mint Leather Skirt

I don't allow myself to buy too many things that are not office appropriate, but a mint leather skirt might be an exception. Considering its versatility is extremely limited, $80 is a bit steep for my budget, but $15 is a reasonable price to swallow. It would be such fun addition to your closet to pull out every now and then for date night!

Black Bean & Spinach Enchiladas

Another Pinterest recipe, another keeper.

It's hard to mess up beans, corn, spinach, cheese and spices wrapped up in a tortilla. But, if it could be done, I'd be the one to figure out how to do it. I was a little nervous about making my own enchilada sauce, and about halfway through I was convinced I'd screwed it up because it became a weird pasty dough-like mixture that I wasn't expecting. I had to whisk it awhile after adding the broth, but the chunks whisked out eventually.

I'm thinking about doing some with cheese sauce next time! With next time being tomorrow night when our friends Will and Courtney come over. I don't think we've ever shared a meal together that wasn't Mexican. Except the time Will made deer chili and I'm ashamed to say I ate and enjoyed it. Poor Bambi. That's the great thing about these enchiladas: No animals were harmed.

Ingredients
{For the sauce}

3 cups organic low sodium vegetable broth
1/4 cup tomato paste
1/4 cup all purpose flour
2 Tbsp. olive oil
2 tsp. cumin
1/4 tsp. garlic powder
1/4 tsp. onion powder
1/4 tsp. chili powder
Salt/pepper

{For the enchiladas}
15 oz. can black beans, rinsed and drained
1 1/2 cups corn (I used frozen, thawed)
6 oz. fresh baby spinach
6 green onions, thinly sliced
1/3 cup cilantro, chopped
2 tsp. cumin
3 cups shredded 3 cheese blend (or pepper jack, etc.)
8 whole wheat or flour tortillas

Directions
  • To make the sauce: in a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add tomato paste, flour, 2 tsp. cumin, garlic powder, onion powder, and chili powder. Cook 1 minute. Whisk in broth, bring to a boil. Reduce to simmer, and cook until slightly thickened about 8 minutes. Salt/pepper to taste, and set aside.
  • Saute the spinach in olive oil over medium heat for 1-2 minutes until slightly wilted.
  • In a large bowl, combine spinach with beans, 2 cups cheese, spinach, corn, green onions, 2 tsp. cumin, and cilantro.
  • Lightly spray a 9x13 inch baking dish, and pour a small amount of the sauce to coat the bottom.
  • Generously fill tortillas with mixture, roll up tightly with ends tucked in, and place seam side down in dish.
  • Pour remaining sauce over the enchiladas, coating evenly. Sprinkle 1 cup cheese on top.
  • Bake about 20 minutes at 375, and garnish with cilantro and/or green onions (optional).

5 Things

5 Things (you may not know about me)

1. In college, pre-Bella, I was dying for a pet. I kept telling Tyler how much I wanted a dog, even though I wasn’t allowed to have one on campus. I also wanted a hedgehog at one point. The summer before my junior year, Tyler came back from the beach and brought back with him a turtle. For me. To have as a pet. It was a little thing, about the size of a half-dollar. I named him Franklin. He lived in a little plastic container with a pink lid filled with water. Sometimes I’d let him run around my bedroom. Once I almost couldn’t find him. He was hiding under my TV stand. It was a pain to travel with Franklin. I had to pour out most of the water from his container so it wouldn’t slosh around in the car. Franklin would try and climb up the side of his house, and fall on his back. Then he couldn’t get up. Whoever was with me would have to pick up him and set him upright multiple times during the trip. Franklin didn’t like traveling. When I graduated and moved to Memphis, Franklin outgrew his little container. Tyler and I bought him a good-sized aquarium, with places to play and a ledge for him to sun on. That tank was a pain to clean. When I moved out of my first apartment in Memphis, Tyler’s parents took Franklin to live at their house because we weren’t allowed to have an aquarium at our current apartment. Since then, Franklin doubled, probably tripled, in size. He’s now larger than my hand. Tyler keeps trying to find someone to adopt Franklin or else he says he’s going to set him loose in a pond. Isn’t that mean? Poor Franklin.

2. I have a really, really bad memory. Tyler says he often feels like he’s on 50 First Dates. Sometimes I just forget things he tells me! Even worse, I’ve forgotten important details about our relationship, such as where our first date was (but I DO remember the first movie we watched together was Borat. Quite the first movie date, huh?). When I recall past events like a concert, a trip, a childhood memory, there are always holes throughout. It’s so frustrating! I’m very fortunate that I have photos and Tyler to help me remember things that have happened. Sometimes it’s like hearing a story for the very first time!

3. I majored in English in undergrad, with a Creative Writing concentration, which means I took a variety of English classes (literature, technical writing, editing, etc.) but the main focus was creative writing. It wasn’t necessarily something I thought I would want to do long-term, but I figured it could only help improve my writing skills. I quickly learned I hated poetry, my life was too boring for non-fiction, but I actually enjoyed writing fiction. My junior year, I wrote a fiction story that was very dark and disturbing, which ended with a violent crime. It was like nothing I had ever written. When I turned it in to my professor, he asked if I’d plagiarized. Here he had a little blonde cheerleader sitting in front of him, presenting him with such story, and he couldn’t possibly believe it “came from my pretty little head.”  After I convinced him it was 100% mine, he encouraged me to enter it into our school’s literary contest, judged by outside authors. My story won, I received $500, and I bought my first designer bag. If that’s not a happy ending, I don’t know what is.

4. Now, I love teen soaps like Gossip Girl & The O.C., but my favorite type of TV program is crime drama. It’s a plus if a government agency is involved. It’s just so fascinating! My favorites are Law and Order: SVU, The Following, Homeland, Dexter, Prison Break, and 24. Based on these, what recommendations do you have for me? I need a new show to be addicted to! I never got into CSI or NCIS, but I’m thinking about trying Bones. What do y’all think?

5. I’ve had cornrows twice in my life. When I was 5… totally my mom’s fault. What was she thinking? Again when I was 13… way old enough to know better. I guess I wanted to be like Monica.

Lavender + Mint

Blouse: Lilly Pulitzer (similar sleeveless version) / Skirt: Revive (similar) / Necklace: c/o LuLuLe / Earrings: LuLuLe  / Bracelet: J. Crew / Bag: Kate Spade / Heels: Gianni Bini

This was my Memphis Fashion Weekend ensemble. It was a beautiful springy day, and I couldn't resist piling on the pastels and light, flowy fabrics. I found this skirt last year at a local Memphis boutique called Revive. There, my long search for a pleated mint skirt ended, and my mint obsession continued to grow. Revive is a relatively new addition to downtown Memphis with great prices and trendy items. Most of their clothes are a little too teen-geared or club-wear for my taste, but I got lucky with this skirt!

And because I'm not above laughing at myself... I think I almost fell.

Don't forget to enter the LuLu-Le giveaway for a chance to win these earrings, and take advantage of the 25% promotion!

A Look for Less + Coming Up This Week...

How adorable is that Chloe sandal?? I love the cork bottom and unique closure, not to mention they'd go with EVERYTHING during the spring/summer/fall months. Plus, who can resist a gold metallic accent and an ankle strap?! Unfortunately, $260 is a lot to spend on one pair of sandals so luckily, I found an alternative! These Clark sandals are more than half the price, and still gives you just as much versatility.

A few things to note: I'm being featured on GBO Fashion tomorrow as Shannon's Style Crush, so be sure and check that out! Also, stay tuned this week for a jewelry giveaway and an inside look at Memphis Fashion Weekend! And lastly, I'm both proud and stunned to announce the winner of the Target/Sephora/J.Crew giveaway as Sheree! She also recently won my Piperlime giveaway only a week ago! Talk about lucky!

No-Reply Commenters + Weekend Plans

What I love: receiving comments from readers! It truly makes me happy to know that people read and enjoy my blog, and I always try to respond and thank you for sharing your thoughts.

What I don't love: not being able to reply to comments and connect with readers. To those who comment and don't receive responses, this is what it looks like when I try to respond:

Emily, from Newlywed Moments, recently wrote about "no-reply comment bloggers" and offered step-by-step instructions on how to fix it. Please take a few minutes to check your profile and see if you're a no-reply commenter, because I would love to chat with you!

Happy Friday! What does everyone have planned for the weekend? I'm covering Memphis Fashion Weekend tonight, spending Saturday morning at the first Farmer's Market of the year, and double dating with Will and Courtney Sunday night! After rain for weeks on end, I'm so excited this weekend is supposed to be 70's and sunny. I know our furry kids will be excited, too, because warm weather + sunshine = long walks :)

Have a great weekend!

Wedding Rehearsal Photos

I randomly came across these photos Tuesday as I was trying to clean up my laptop. I had forgotten all about them, so that's why I'm 9 months late on sharing! Aside from our actual wedding day, the day before was one of the most fun days I've had! Having the opportunity to be with all my closest friends and family all at once never happens, and just looking at these photos makes me miss everyone so much! I promise to share the wedding photos soon :)
